East Midlands Gateway
East Midlands Gateway is putting international business at the Heart of the Midlands, connecting East Midlands to major UK ports, taking more freight off the roads
East Midlands Gateway is a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange
East Midlands Gateway a 700 acre development between Junctions 23a and 24 of the M1, which is home to the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI). Putting the 'inland port' at the epicentre of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire and the heart of the United Kingdom's transport network.
DB Cargo UK operated the first commercial rail freight service from the Port of Felixstowe, the UK’s busiest container port on January 7, 2020. The new East Midlands Gateway Terminal in Castle Donington is capable of handling up to 16 trains/day of up to 775 m in length, and has space to store more than 5 000 TEU.
Connecting East Midlands to major UK ports, taking more freight off roads
The rail service delivers a huge opportunity for customers who import and export via sea freight. Because it offers a greener, more flexible solution for the movement of containerised goods, increasing productivity and removing truck miles from the UK's major routes. The EMG rail terminal will connect into Network Rail's Castle Donington Branch to the ports at Southampton, Felixstowe, London Gateway plus other smaller UK ports. As well as operating rail services, the terminal will provide storage capacity for more than 50,000 pallets of cargo.
Uniting air, road and passenger and rail freight in a central location
The site enjoys a strategic location which adjoins East Midlands Airport and the East Midlands Gateway area has been described as a transport and logistics ‘sweet spot’ - because it unites air, road, and passenger and rail freight in a central location. The development will provide 7,000 jobs once fully operational and has levered private investment of £500m. It provides huge opportunities for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire
